For more than a week, a frail black dog wandered the streets, limping, terrified, and running from every hand that tried to help her. Abandoned and betrayed, she had lost all trust in humans.

Deputy Keith Stokes tried again and again to rescue her, but she always slipped away. Then Officer Megan Feidler chose a different path. She knelt down, spoke softly, and simply waited.

Little by little, the trembling dog lowered herself to the ground and, for the first time, let someone close. With calm and patience, Feidler gently slipped a leash around her neck.

Inside the van, the exhausted dog curled up and fell asleep, as if finally understanding she was safe. A veterinary exam later revealed a fractured hip, but volunteers gave her a new name: Maeve. With that name came a promise of healing, love, and a second chance at life.
